Song Of The Year: 1970-2015

Unlike the Oscars For Best Tits awards that I hand out every year, and for which 5,000 masturbators vote for, this award I alone decide the winners for. Rather then let those 5,000 morons vote for the best music (and most of them listen to Bon Jovi anyway), I thought it best to do this myself, seeing as how I anyway have an outstanding understand of music and an M.Q. that belongs in the top percentile of the population.

Rule 1: Only one song is allowed per album. This is not a best-album list, so I wanted to avoid having one or two albums dominate the runner-ups lists - or to have to list dozens of songs.

Rule 2: Songs were chosen regardless of how popular they are. There are big hits here as well as total obscurities. I could give three shits for the "coolness" of a song or a band, but have included whatever I consider to be excellent music, regardless of the band's image, political affiliation or whatever else that has nothing to do with the quality of the music itself.

Rule 3: Lyrics play no part in my choice selection. I only care about the music.

Rule 4: No instrumentals. Just vocal tracks. I love instrumentals but this is a song list.

Rule 5: There is no rule 5.

The YouTube links I have provided are there for you to hear the song. I do not promote these clips, as some of them are not that great. Most of these songs weren't released as singles, so some of the clips aren't official videos, and sometimes there are no clips at all, just the music, which is probably the best way to hear new stuff.

I decided not to include basic info about the winner bands, such as what country they're from and what genre of music they play, because I want to avoid prejudice. It's bad enough I gave you the album covers, which will already make you form positive or negative opinions before you even heard the bloody songs.

Check out all the links. Don't be a putz. Some of the greatest music ever written can be found here, so don't be a jackass and listen to all the winners (and if you have the time, the runners-up as well).

On the other hand, if you're a Bon Jovi fan or like listening to R'n'B and rap music, just skip this list. Skip the entire blog.

Song Of The Year - Decided By Me

2016.

Cult Of Luna & Julie Christmas  A GREATER CALL

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_O-NZfzvj0
The entire album (except for track 4) is a masterpiece and I don't use that word lightly. I very much recommend it to fans of bombastic, dynamic, alternative metal with spiffing female vocals. The song has a bit of a lengthier intro and if you're too impatient to sit through it - you're an ass!

Runner-up:

"Charging the Void" Vektor
"Winter" Oceans of Slumber
"Jumalten aika" Moonsorrow
"Secret Sciences" Devin Townsend
"Consensus" Schammasch
"Storm Front" Omnium Gatherum

2015.

Mgla  EXERCISES IN FUTILITY V

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWXc2OrU-fM

Runners-up:

"Thurisaz Dreaming" Enslaved
"Victim of the Past" Paradise Lost
"The Grand Design" Keep of Kalessin
"Inmazes" VOLA
"Panoptikon" Killing Joke
"Music to Watch Boys To" Lana Del Rey

2014.

Devin Townsend  UNIVERSAL FLAME

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZ8Xt4CV2qQ
Yet another gem from Townsend, an upbeat pop metal track for the unpretentious, unhipster crowd.

Runners-up:

"Elama on Tulta" Ghost Brigade
"Dimension Z" Devin Townsend
"Perspective" Devin Townsend

Note: all three Devin Townsend songs are from different albums

2013.

The Monolith Deathcult HUMAN WAVE ATTACK (12-minute Vjetropev mix)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnHrrzGWd0I
I might eventually upload my version of this song to YT, which is better than the original, and place the link here. The song is somewhat reminiscent of Ministry's "NWO" but still highly effective, with a terrific fast part and plenty of straight-forward grioove. A great example of how powerful a simple song idea can be when utilized right. Industrial metal at its most fun.

Runner-up:

"The Center" Sons Of Aeon
"Submariner" Marnie
"Traveler of Unlight" Shade Empire
"Stigmatized" Sodom

2012.

Lana Del Rey  SUMMERTIME SADNESS

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TdrL3QxjyVw
Yes, she is retarded, but stupid people can perform great music equally well as smart musicians.

Runners-up:

"Grace" Devin Townsend
"On All Hallows Eve" Killing Joke
"Revenge Best Served Cold" Prong
"Roots of the Mountain" Enslaved

2011.

Devin Townsend  FEATHER

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3iuwY4s7AuY
The song is 11 minutes long, so don't bother clicking on the link if you're the impatient type seeking quick thrills. This is a very mellow track, nothing like what is usually associated with this guy's music.

Runners-up:

"The Mighty Masturbator" Devin Townsend

"Juno" Devin Townsend
"90 Degrees" Ladytron
"Bleib stehn" Knorkator
"Karve" Trollfest
"End to the Lies" Jane's Addiction
"Clawmaster" Ghost Brigade
"Heimvegen" Enslaved

Note: All three Devin Townsend songs listed here are from different releases, hence I haven't broken my one-song-per-album rule.

2010.

Enslaved  SINGULAR

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7r55bBBNL4
This is my main ring-tone. If you hear it coming out of a mobile phone somewhere, that's me.

Runners-up:

"Bite Me" Hocico
"Soul Survivor" Angels & Airwaves
"European Super State" Killing Joke
"Ghouls of Nineveh" Melechesh

2009.

Ghost Brigade  INTO THE BLACK LIGHT

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnevjQQEk8c
A grand track, with its highlight toward the finish line. It's typical of this band to start off slow, then build toward a crescendo.

Runners-up:

"Голос сталі" Nokturnal Mortum
"Numbered" Devin Townsend
"Waidmanns Heil" Rammstein
"Liki bessmertnykh bogov" Arkona
"Vodka" Korpiklaani
"False Sleepwalker" Darzamat
"When Love Takes Over" (by the otherwise useless) David Guetta
"The Fear" Lily Allen

2008.

Ladytron  BLACK CAT

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Lwh5gu58oc
All the other songs from this album are crap. This one, however, instantly gratifies and never gets boring, even after dozens of listens. This was a very weak year in both music and film, but this song is magnificent.

Runners-up:

"Time To Pretend" MGMT
"The Evil Has Landed" Testament
"Mysterium Babel" Hollenthon
"Combustion" Meshuggah
"King of the World" Sig:Ar:Tyr
"Reflection" Enslaved

2007.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkS5mjrx_jc

Runners-up:

"Zodiac" (Melvins cover) Strapping Young Lad
"Solar Winds" Devin Townsend
"Mescal Rite I" Tomahawk

"Tervaskanto" Korpiklaani
"Pogo" Digitalism
"Hope" Swallow the Sun

2006.

Enslaved  RUUN

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFsa9rlC0mU
The song "RUUN" - one of the very best metal songs of all time - also has one of the most impressive guitar riffs of all time. Are your ears smart enough to detect it? Admittedly, there is more than just one great guitar part here.
The other brilliant track from this album is "Cosmic Seed" which would have won this year if the title track weren't even better. The rest is merely OK.
This is an extremely strong year for extreme music, so checking out the runner-up songs as well is a must.

Runners-up:

"This Tribal Antidote" Killing Joke
"The Pentagram Burns" Satyricon
"Fear" Ministry
"Almost Again" Strapping Young Lad

"Rebirth of the Nemesis" Melechesh
"Judgment" Devin Townsend

2005.

Strapping Young Lad  SKEKSIS

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjVT0MhSNeo
The entire song is impressive, but the build-up to the fast part - and the fast part itself - are high-energy metal at its brilliant best. Music doesn't get any better than this.

Runners-up:

"Scarborough Fair" (cover) Amy Nuttall
"Chicago" Sufjan Stevens
"Run Baby Run" Garbage
"Ocean Planet" Gojira
"Tragic Tragic Track Jacket" HeavyHeavyLowLow
"Destroy Everything You Touch" Ladytron

"Enemy Of God" Kreator
"Fire In The Hole" General Patton vs. The X-Ecutioners

2004.

Ministry  NO W

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBGMW86u1Qk
"Parental Advisory: Retarded Lyrics." Politically, this band is Marxist. Just a warning to music fans who care about the lyrics.

Runners-up:

"Moskau" Rammstein
"Guardiani del Destino" Rhapsody
"Spitfire" Prodigy
"Sunshine the Werewolf" The Dillinger Escape Plan
"Crepuscule" Kaada/Patton
"Violet Dawning" Enslaved

2003.

Killing Joke  THE DEATH & RESURRECTION SHOW

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Y-a7T7S9eE
One of the best albums of that year. Some of you might have heard this song in a computer game. It's been desecrated, yes.

Runners-up:

"Deadhead" Devin Townsend
"Animosity" Ministry

"Challa" Panjabi MC
"Just Because" Jane's Addiction

"The Omen" (cover) Fantomas
"Tiny Tears" Devin Townsend

"Nietzschean Conspiracy" Sigh
"Pagan Poetry" Bjork

"Sonne" Rammstein
"No Easy Way Out" Ozzy Osbourne
"Don't Let Me Get Me" Pink

2000.

Bjork  OVERTURE/NEW WORLD

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXT9wTzCPA8
A retarded singer singing and acting in a very retarded movie called "Dancer in the Dark". But some of the music here is simply brilliant. The YouTube clip provided shows scenes from a different movie (also retarded).

Runners-up:

"Namaste" Devin Townsend
"The Man Of Constant Sorrow" The Soggy Bottom Boys (OST O Brother, Where Art Thou?)
"Red Tomorrow" Devin Townsend

"Opticon" Orgy
"Flood III" Boris

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Db1Oa-JdwMk
Another anthemic pop song from a fairly underrated 90s band.

Runners-up:

"Life Is All Dynamics" Devin Townsend
"Dragula" Rob Zombie
"Pure Morning" Placebo
"Böse" Knorkator

"Blue Bolero" Adiemus
"Thank U" by the very stupid Alanis Morissette
"Left For Dead" Voodoo Glow Skulls

"Fiend" Orgy
"Ray of Light" by the utterly talent-free Madonna

1997.

Devin Townsend  LIFE

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IL7SoDwTbZA
The best album of 1997, and one of the best in recent decades, an absolute milestone. A very strong year for music releases, so it was tough to pick the best song.

1995.

Republica  READY TO GO

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JgffRW1fKDk
Unlike what you might think, this is not a one-hit pop wonder. This album has a number of great songs. Fuck 'em though for using Commie imagery, clueless little bird-brained well-fed Western brats. Interesting how this pop/rock song beat out all the stiff metal competition.

Runners-up:

"Carry Stress In The Jaw" Mr. Bungle

Mr. Bungle  TRAVOLTA aka QUOTE UNQUOTE

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fq5s0KrFkmo

Note: the YouTube clip features the short version of the song.
Possibly the best album of the 90s, and one of the most revolutionary albums of all time. Not for everyone, but those who enjoy originality combined with great song-writing, playfulness and sheer power will love this album.

1983.

Robert Plant  BIG LOG

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZQL22xOmUM
This is off a very poor album, with this song being its baffling mega-highlight and exception. Perhaps the best ballad ever written. Plant has never sung better and the guitars are exceptional.

Runners-up:

"Where Eagles Dare" Iron Maiden
"Let's Dance" David Bowie

Motörhead  THE HAMMER

AC/DC  LET THERE BE ROCK

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGBxoAk1rsI
I am not much of a fan of the band, but this might just be the best hard rock song of all time. Guitar sound and riffs don't get any better than this. This majestic 6-minute killer track also has one of the best end-of-song guitar solos ever recorded. A rare moment of originality for them.

    1. It's much easier to do this sort of thing by year, even if that means focusing less on some high-quality runner-up albums.

I suggest an ESL course, or in your case EFL, English as a First Language.

Still, I'm glad you listened to all the songs here. You always do every single homework I give you on this blog, and you do it with utter dedication. Proud of ya.
